Part of the inscription on the paper pasted onto this palette reads:
This pallette [sic] was set by Sir Joshua Reynolds for Mary Marchioness of Buckingham when she copied the celebrated picture of Mrs Siddons under the instructions of Sir Joshua at Stowe.
Mary Elizabeth Grenville (née Nugent), Marchioness of Buckingham (1758-1812) was a keen amateur painter and many of her works are still at Stowe House. Mary made a copy of Sir Joshua Reynolds’s famous painting of Mrs Siddons as the Tragic Muse, now in the The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens (California).
