Frederick Richard Lee RA, Morning in the Meadows

Morning in the Meadows, ca. 1869

Frederick Richard Lee RA (1798 - 1879)

RA Collection: Art

Lee was born in Devon and became well known for his peaceful Devon scenes, although he painted landscapes throughout England, Scotland and Wales. This painting is loosely based on the river at Cliveden. In the foreground is the Cliveden Ferry, a large punt used by farmers and tourists, to cross the Thames. Across the river are large eel bucks or baskets. These were fixed in line to posts which allowed them to be raised and lowered into the river and were used to catch mature eels.
