Henry Dixon & Son, Middle Temple - Gate House

Middle Temple - Gate House, ca.1885

From: Henry Dixon & Son

RA Collection: Art

"The Gatehouse (No.100), which is Wren's, bears the following inscription: SVRREXIT . IMPENS . SOC . M . TEMPLI . MDCLXXXIV., which date is repeated under the figure of the lamb over the entrance. The gatehouse replaced by Wren's structure was erected by Sir Amias Paulet, who before Wolsey came to be a great man, had put the future Cardinal in the stocks. Fourteen years later the Cardinal revenged himself by imprisoning Sir Amias in the Gatehouse of the Middle Temple, which he also made him rebuild. It is probably this circumstance which lead to the name of "Wolsey's Palace," given to the other gate of the Temple."

The above description, by Alfred Marks, was taken from the letterpress which accompanies these photographs.
