John Gibson RA, Love between Beauty and Fortune

Love between Beauty and Fortune

John Gibson RA (1790 - 1866)

RA Collection: Art

A pen and ink drawing of 'Love between Beauty and Fortune' depicting Cupid in the centre of the composition leaving Beauty on the left for Fortune on the right. The drawing is in pen and ink outline and is squared up in pencil suggesting that the artist intended to transfer the design to a larger scale, possibly in preparation for carving. Gibson produced a plaster relief of this composition (see 03/3037) but did not execute it in marble.

This drawing was engraved and published in Imitations of Drawings by John Gibson , R.A. Sculptor, Engraved by G. Wenzel and L. Prosseda, Plate 19 entitled 'Love Reproved for deserting Beauty and following Fortune'. The relief was also engraved and published in Engravings from the Original Compositions of John Gibson, R.A., Sculptor. Rome...Drawn by P. Guglielmi and engraved under the direction of Lewis Gruner by Th. Langer, O. Ufer and Siedentopf.
