Sir George Clausen RA, Landscape study

Landscape study

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

In this drawing, Clausen used a sof pencil to darken the foreground trees and grass while leaving the more distant landscape a lighter grey. There are several other drawings in the RA Collection of Clausen's work which display the same technique including RA 05/634. Although this method is a conventional way of conveying recession over distance, it also relates specifically to the landscapes Clausen produced in the 1920s exploring the early-morning effects of mist and frost on the landscape.
