Landscape study, probably 1920s/30s

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

This detailed study, looking down on a flat landscape dotted with trees and a few houses, is executed entirely in black pastel. The horizon is low and the sky occupies three-quarters of the paper. Clouds have been suggested with lines and shading. Extensive colour notes on the verso suggest that this is probably a preparatory sketch for a painting.

The location is almost certainly the Essex countryside and the work probably dates from the early decades of the twentieth century.
