Henry Dixon & Son, Inner Temple - King's Bench Walk

Inner Temple - King's Bench Walk, ca.1885

From: Henry Dixon & Son

RA Collection: Art

"The third view shows (No.99) shows the doorway of No.5, King's Bench Walk. It is the best of four in somewhat similar style, the others being plainer. Over the doorway of No.4 is the following inscription, divided by triglyphs:-

Conflagratam Ano 1677 Fabricatum Ano 1678

Richardo Powell Armiger Thesaurare

They are very good examples of the cut and rubbed brickwork recommended for ornament by the authorities after the Great Fire (Noorthouck's History of London, Appendix XLIX., p.849). Lord Mansfield, when Mr Murray, occupied chambers in this house, which is the number five of Pope's Ode to Venus:-

"To number five direct your doves,

There spread round Murray all your blooming loves.""

The above description, by Alfred Marks, was taken from the letterpress which accompanies the photographs.
