Alfred Parsons RA, Iris Japonica

Iris Japonica, by 1896

Alfred Parsons RA (1847 - 1920)

RA Collection: Art

These drawings were all made by Alfred Parsons for reproduction in his book Notes in Japan, an account of his visit to that country between 1892-1894. The book was published in 1896 but much of the text and some of the illustrations had already been serialised in Harper's Monthly Magazine. Several of the illustrations relate to descriptive passages in the text while others are simply used as decorative devices. One of the drawings illustrates a short discourse on the comparative merits of the Japanese and European landscape traditions.

Related works:

There are several drawings for the Notes in Japan illustrations (as well as drawings for other publications with which Parsons was involved) in the V&A collection
