Hadleigh Castle [Large plate], 1830 / 1832?
John Constable RA (1776 - 1837)
RA Collection: Art
Although David Lucas's mezzotint was evidently well underway by the end of February 1830 (see Constable's letter to Lucas dated 26 February 1830), it was evidently laid aside, perhaps when it was decided to re-engrave the same subject on a smaller plate for publication in English Landscape Scenery (5th number, June 1832). Lucas's large 'Hadleigh Castle' remained unpublished until the print publisher Henry Graves & Co.declared a small edition to the Printsellers' Association in 1849. This impression, which entered the RA Collection in January 1840, is an unpublished progress proof.
