Robert Buhler RA, Green Park

Green Park, 1947

Robert Buhler RA (1916 - 1989)

RA Collection: Art

This is one of a series of cityscapes, which Buhler painted in the 1940s. This wintry view of the Green Park appears to be depicted from the balcony of No 94 Piccadilly, with its "In" and "Out" gates, then home to the Naval and Military Club. Buhler's typically muted colouring and soft tonality is broken by the flash of a bold red double-decker bus.

Buhler exhibited this painting at the Royal Academy in 1947 along with 'Piccadilly Circus', painted from a high viewpoint of the Irish Embassy and 'Carlyle Square' painted from one of the windows of his Chelsea home.
