Henry Dixon & Son, George Inn Yard, Southwark

George Inn Yard, Southwark, ca.1881

From: Henry Dixon & Son

RA Collection: Art

"The "George" as we have already seen from Stow, is also an old Inn; it appears in Mr Rendle's map. The comfortable Inn has evidently been a good deal modernised since its re-building after the fire of 1676. Its large courtyard is now used as a railway goods office. The east and north galleries have been so boarded up as to lose all their old character."

[W. Rendle, Old Southwark and its People]

The above description, by Alfred Marks, has been taken from the letterpress which accompanies the photographs. In 1937, the inn was acquired by The National Trust.
