Figure studies for 'The Ark of Deliverance', early 1860s?

George Frederic Watts RA (1817 - 1904)

RA Collection: Art

On this sheet are three figure studies for 'The Ark of Deliverance', also known as 'The Building of the Ark'. At the top, is a study for the standing figure of Noah clutching a large plank of wood. Below, are two studies for the figure sitting on the ground on the right and leaning on a saw.

Watts first worked on this composition in the early 1860s when preparing plates for the Dalziel brothers' Illustrated Bible project. He later returned to the subject and painted it between 1880-90 (Watts Gallery).
