The son of the engraver Edward Goodall, Goodall exhibited fifteen paintings at the Royal Academy between 1841 and 1884, including in 1857 'The Green Hill Battery, heavy bombardment, April 1855 - sunrise' a work made from sketches he had made during the siege of Sebastopol when he was artist correspondent for the Illustrated London News.
