Joe Tilson RA, Dionysos Karpios

Dionysos Karpios, 1990-91

Joe Tilson RA (1928 - 2023)

RA Collection: Art

Joe Tilson was elected ARA on 20 May 1985, and RA on 26 June 1991. Dionysos Karpios is Tilson’s diploma work, dating from 1990-91. It was one of a new series of prints based on mythological scenes. Dionysos is the god of wine, festivity and fertility in Greek mythology while the epithet Karpios means 'fruit bringer'.

Tilson made a pencil sketch for the print in a notebook in August 1990, under the heading ‘New Woodcuts – August 1990’. There is no indication why Tilson chose to submit this particular print, other than that it was a recent work developing subject matter present in his graphic work for many years.
