Design for a monument to Frances Buss, foundress of the North London Collegiate School for Ladies, 1879
Henry Hugh Armstead RA (1828 - 1905)
RA Collection: Art
Although her name does not appear on the inscription, this monument commemorates Frances Buss (1827-1894), who founded the North London Collegiate School for Ladies in 1849-1850. The school moved to a new purpose-built site designed by E. C. Robins at St. Pancras in 1879, which is probably why Armstead was commissioned to design this plaque. By this stage the North London Collegiate School was recognised as one of the first public schools for girls.
