John Gibson RA, Design for a memorial to Lady Knightley

Design for a memorial to Lady Knightley, ca. 1856

John Gibson RA (1790 - 1866)

RA Collection: Art

A pen and ink design for his memorial to Lady Knightley at Fawsley, Northants, showing a female figure on the right bending forwards to embrace a standing angel. The drawing is in pen and ink outline over pencil and is squared-up in pencil suggesting that the artist intended to transfer the design to a larger scale, perhaps for sculpting.

The finished design is published as a line engraving, Plate XXXVIII in Engravings from the Original Compositions of John Gibson, R.A., Sculptor. Rome...Drawn by P. Guglielmi and engraved under the direction of Lewis Gruner by Th. Langer, O. Ufer and Siedentopf.
