Richard Redgrave RA, Compositional sketch possibly for 'The Poor Teacher'

Compositional sketch possibly for 'The Poor Teacher', c. 1840

Richard Redgrave RA (1804 - 1888)

RA Collection: Art

A small compositional sketch possibly for 'The Poor Teacher'. Redgrave painted the original version of 'The Poor Teacher' and exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1843. This sketch shows a woman seated at a table holding what is possibly a letter. The contrast of light and shade seems to have been a preoccupation in many of the compositional sketches in the album. Here, the artist has further added white highlights to some areas of the sketch to indicate where it should be lighter.
