Richard Redgrave RA, Compositional sketch for 'The Fortune Hunter'

Compositional sketch for 'The Fortune Hunter', c. 1843

Richard Redgrave RA (1804 - 1888)

RA Collection: Art

A compositional sketch in pen and ink for 'The Fortune Hunter', which Redgrave painted and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843.

In this sketch there does not appear to be a screen separating the spurned woman from the couple. Additionally, she is seated facing them, in contrast to the painting.

The contrast of light and shade seems to have been a preoccupation in many of the compositional sketches in the album. Here the artist has left blank some areas of the sketch to indicate where it should be lighter.
