Richard Redgrave RA, Compositional sketch for 'Going to Service'

Compositional sketch for 'Going to Service', c. 1843

Richard Redgrave RA (1804 - 1888)

RA Collection: Art

A compositional sketch in pen and ink for 'Going to Service', which Redgrave painted and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843.

The contrast of light and shade seems to have been a preoccupation in many of the compositional sketches in the album. Here the artist has left blank areas that should be lit in a roughly diagonal swathe from top right to bottom left.
