Richard Redgrave RA, Compositional sketch for 'Bad News from Sea'

Compositional sketch for 'Bad News from Sea', c. 1842

Richard Redgrave RA (1804 - 1888)

RA Collection: Art

A small compositional sketch in pen and ink for 'Bad News from Sea', though in this sketch the room is a mirror image of that in the painting. 'Bad News from Sea' was painted in 1842 and exhibited at the Royal Academy the same year.

The artist has not added the white highlights that feature in other pen and ink sketches in the same album but the sketch still demonstrates his preoccupation with the contrast of light and shade in the composition.
