Hew Locke RA (b. 1959)

RA Collection: Art

Chevalier belongs to Hew Locke’s self-portrait series 'How Do You Want Me?' comprising a series of eleven life-size photographs, in which the artist adopts sinister identities (in this case, a menacing knight), all carrying regalia of state. For the artist: ‘Each is a demonic Nemesis, a threat to the state made flesh […] I felt I was acknowledging the potential for violence within each of us.’

'How Do You Want Me?' also refers to the voracious desire of the art world for the latest ‘exotic’ thing. As the artists explains: ‘It was my way of saying, well how do you want me? […] If this is how you want your black artists to be – then I can project that image for you.’
