Capitoline Museums (Rome), Cast of ornate column base, perhaps from the Temple of Concord

Cast of ornate column base, perhaps from the Temple of Concord

From: Capitoline Museums (Rome)

RA Collection: Art

On free display in Green Room - South Dining Room

The cast shows a section of a column base of which there are several examples now in the Tabularium of the Capitoline Museum. The base has a complicated profile and belonged to a composite column.

There are fragments of c. 16 such bases, and they may have come from the Temple of Concord which is just below the Tabularium in the Roman Forum. The cast was part of the collection of casts of Thomas Lawrence which were sold on auction on 10 May 1830 and acquired by the Royal Academy. It was certainly on display on the wall in the studios of the Royal Academy from 1880 to 2003.
