British Museum, Cast of low relief depicting figure of Victory and acanthus decoration

Cast of low relief depicting figure of Victory and acanthus decoration

From: British Museum

RA Collection: Art

On free display in Green Room - North Dining Room

The cast is of a portion of a terracotta relief which probably served as an antefix. The cast does not show the peaked upper edge of the original object which is now in the British Museum. It was part of the collection of Charles Townley which was purchased at his death in 1805 by the British Museum.

The figural decoration, a victory amid acanthus scrolls, is symmetric and deliberately styled to look archaic. This is typical of this genre of terracotta panels of early imperial date.
