Cast of Figure D (Dionysos?) from east pediment of Parthenon

From: British Museum

RA Collection: Art

The cast is of a seated male (D) from the south (viewer's left) corner zone of the Parthenon's East Pediment (438-433 BC). The statue group was removed by Lord Elgin's agent in 1802 and was acquired by the British Museum in 1816. The Royal Academy has two casts of this figure, one probably was acquired in 1816 from the Prince Regent.

At the centre of the east pediment was the birth of Athena from the head of Zeus. This figure faces away from that scene and instead greets the chariot of the rising sun. He is usually identified as Dionysus, though Hercules has also been considered.
