Cast of a scrolling acanthus frieze , late 18th century/early 19th century

From: Torre di Nerone, Rome

RA Collection: Art

On free display in The Dorfman Architecture Court

The cast is of a frieze block which has been used as spolia or repuposed building stone in a medieval tower known as the Torre di Nerone, on via Quattro Novembre in Rome. This tower overlooks the Forum of Trajan.

The Royal Academy has another cast of a single plant from this frieze, 11/987, and probably both casts were acquired from the collection of Thomas Lawrence in 1830.
