Edward Onslow Ford presented this bust to the Royal Academy as his Diploma work in 1895. Alma-Tadema admired it greatly and painted a portrait of the sculptor's daughter Clothilde, in exchange for a copy. He dedicated the portrait "For Friend Ford".
