This portrait bust of John Flaxman is one of eight busts of artists and architects installed in the 'Octagon' in the Main Galleries at Burlington House when the RA moved there in 1868.

The cast is taken from the bust of Flaxman by Edward Hodges Baily which the sculptor submitted as his Diploma Work following his election as an Academician in 1821.
