RA Collection: Art

This bust is a cast from a full-length figure made by Donatello for the Church of Orsanmichele, Florence (ca.1415-1417). St. George was the patron saint of the Arte dei Corazzai (Guild of Armourers), which commissioned the sculpture in c.1414.

Originally positioned in a niche in the Church, it has since been relocated to the Museo Nazionale del Bargello and a copy put in its place.

This plaster cast was bought by the Royal Academy, possibly in the late 19th century, from the the firm of cast makers, D. Brucciani & Co
