Arnold Mason RA, Brown Study

Brown Study, 1949

Arnold Mason RA (1885 - 1963)

RA Collection: Art

Brown Study, with its objectionable title, seems to have been Mason’s only portrait of a black sitter. In this he contrasted with Procter, who painted many portraits in Jamaica. The title of this work suggests Mason selected his sitter on the basis of ethnicity, as for his paintings Indian Girl, Irish Girl, Spanish Girl and A Ceylonese, all of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy.
Painted shortly after the arrival in Britain of 492 migrants from Caribbean countries on board the MV Empire Windrush in June 1948, Mason’s painting invites consideration as a response to this landmark moment in British history.
