Sir George Clausen RA, Barn interior with colour notes

Barn interior with colour notes

Sir George Clausen RA (1852 - 1944)

RA Collection: Art

This study of a barn interior shows grain sacks and a cylindrical container at bottom right. Various areas throughout the drawing are inscribed with a number from 1-7, these relate to Clausen's method of recording tonal values in a scene which would be used for later reference in the studio in addition to descriptive colour notes. This numbering system is seen in other drawings.

Clausen began to exhibit paintings of barn interiors as a distinct motif from 1897 until well into the 1930s.
