RA Collection: Art

Stephen Frederick Gooden was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1937, and a Royal Academician in 1946. He was also appointed CBE in 1942. As his Diploma Work he submitted a very recent work, the arms of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. Gooden, who worked almost exclusively as a line-engraver, worked primarily as an illustrator, but his output also includes bookplates, banknotes and other ornamental designs. The museum curator and art historian Campbell Dodgson published a comprehensive catalogue of Gooden’s work in 1944.
