Philip Connard RA, Apollo and Daphne

Apollo and Daphne, ca. 1925

Philip Connard RA (1875 - 1958)

RA Collection: Art

Philip Connard, Keeper of the Royal Academy between 1945 (when teaching operations resumed after World War II) and 1949, was sympathetic to the anti-modernist stance of then-PRA Sir Alfred Munnings. The world of Connard’s 1920s paintings such as Apollo and Daphne is lush, sometimes idyllic, and profoundly untouched by modernity and its discontents.
