The painting on the easel in the photograph is 'A Subject from Pepys's Diary. 2 Feb. 15, 1663. Mr Hales began my wife's portrait in the posture we saw one of my Lady Peters, like a St. Katherine. While he painted, Knipp, Mercer and I sang.' The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1852, cat.248.
