One of twelve plates by William Strang illustrating his own ballad Death and the Ploughman's Wife. The plates were made using a combination of etching, engraving and mezzotint in 1888, although the complete illustrated volume was not published until 1894, in an edition of 110 number copies.

The RA's copy of the book was owned by the Academician Laura Knight and her husband Harold, who were themselves gifted the book by Strang's son David.
