RA Collection: Art

This detailed sketch shows the tomb of Bernabò Visconti sculpted by Bonino da Campione in the Castello Sforzesco, Milan (1363- 1385). It was drawn during the artist's stay in Italy from 1913-1914. At the Royal Academy Schools, Ledward won the gold medal for sculpture as well as a scholarship to the British School at Rome. He travelled to Italy at the end of 1913 and remained in Rome until May when he was joined by his wife, Margery. Between May and August they toured Italy together visiting many central and northern cities. The beginning of the First World War at the end of July and Britain's declaration of war on Germany on the 4th August hastened their return to London.
