Parthenon, Athens, Cast of sandal-binder from West frieze (figure 29 of Slab XV)

Cast of sandal-binder from West frieze (figure 29 of Slab XV)

From: Parthenon, Athens

RA Collection: Art

The cast is of a single figure (29) from slab XV of the west frieze of the Parthenon. It shows a rider in front of his horse. He bends to fasten the sandal of his left foot which is raised on a mounting block; his right foot is still unshod. The original slab, (IX), is in Athens.

The Royal Academy had only four casts from the West frieze and used them as framing devices for runs of consecutive casts from the North frieze.
