Gilbert Stuart Newton RA, Abelard in his Study

Abelard in his Study, 1833

Gilbert Stuart Newton RA (1794 - 1835)

RA Collection: Art

According to William Sandby, Newton’s Diploma work was his last painting. The subject combines Newton’s interest in literary learning, romance and historicism. It depicts the French 12th-century scholar, Peter Abelard in his study. A dialectician, philosopher, and theologian, Abelard is perhaps best known for his ill-fated romance with his student Heloise, which has been the subject of several operas.
