Frederick Gore RA, Near Soller, Majorca

Near Soller, Majorca, ca. 1960

Frederick Gore RA (1913 - 2009)

RA Collection: Art

Frederick Gore's father, the artist Spencer Gore, was a founder member of the Camden Town Group. Frederick studied at Ruskin School of Art and was later Head of Painting at St. Martin's School of Art.

Gore's passion for light and colour is clearly revealed in his Mediterranean landscapes, particularly those painted in Majorca. In this mountainous landscape the blaze of colour becomes almost abstract with the horizontal layers of yellow and red in the foreground providing a strong compositional foundation, beyond which the distant mountains rise almost to the top of the canvas.
