Summary Note

No publication date is printed on the title page, but one plate ([113]) carries the publisher's imprint of Baldwin and Cradock with the date 1837. Most plates are reprints including their earlier signatures and dates of publication.

Hogarth's engravings made him well-known throughout Europe in the eighteenth century - in Germany G.C. Lichtenberg published an influential series of commentaries on them between 1784 and 1796 - and throughout the nineteenth century they were continually reprinted.

Binding Note

19th-century half brown morocco, marbled-papered boards, upper cover carrying red morocco label with gilt border lettered 'The Original Works Of Hogarth'; gilt-decorated spine, brown morocco spine-label lettered 'Works Of Hogarth'.
