Summary Note

"An extremely pretty and successful anthology devised by Joseph Cundall, with text designed and printed by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press, and Birket Foster's illustrations, presumably overprinted, on the Chiswick Press sheets, by Edmund Evans, in four or five colours - his first full-colour reproductive engraving. Later editions of Sabbath Bells, in 1861, 1862, and after, were reset and entirely printed by Edmund Evans"--McLean, Ruari, Victorian book design, p. 179.

Provenance

Publisher's binding of brown morocco vertical-grain cloth stamped in blind and gold, signed with the initials WHR [i.e. William Harry Rogers] in gold as a monogram at the base of the decoration; bevelled boards; gilt edges.
