The RIBA copy is catalogued as having a dedication page before the Preface ('A ... La Reine Des Deux Siciles' - if this was to Napoleon's sister, Caroline, this dedication page may well have been omitted from sets of plates distributed after 1813, when she was evicted from Naples). - Vol. II: [4], 104, [2] p., 3, 55 pl.: illus. Plates 44, 48 are dble. Pl. 4 and 6 are transposed. - Vol. III: 79, [1] p., 50 [i.e. 53] pl.: illus. There are bis pl. 9, 13, 14. Summary Note

The publication dates given on the title-pages of the four volumes are 1824, 1824, 1829 and 1838. The added engraved title-plate included in Vol. I carries the publication-date of 1812, indicating that a version of the work was issued at that time. The 1824-38 publication was in 37 livraisons (listed in the 'Avis Au Lecteur' in Part 4), which probably began to appear some time before 1824.

Title variants occur in Volumes III and IV. The title of the third volume reads, 'Les Ruines De Pompéi, Par F. Mazois ...; Et Continué Par M. Gau, Auteur Des Antiquités De La Nubie. Troisième Partie.' That of the fourth volume reads, 'Les Ruines De Pompéi, Par F. Mazois... Ouvrage Continué Par M. Gau, Architecte, Précédé D'Une Notice Sur F. Mazois, Par M. Le Cher Artaud, Membre De L'Académie Des Inscriptions Et Belles-Lettres, Et De L'Explication De La Grande Mosaique Découverte A Pompéi En 1831, Par M. Quartremère de Quincy, Secrétaire Perpétuel De L'Académie Des Inscriptions Et Belles-Lettres. - Le Texte de la Quatrième Partie a été rédigé par M. Barré, Professeur de Philosophie. Quatrième Partie.' Volume I also includes the engraved title-plate of the 1812 issue, which reads, 'Les Ruines De Pompei Dessinées Et Mesurées Par F. Mazois Pendant Les Années MDCCCIX - MDCCCX - MDCCCXI Publiées A Paris En MDCCCXII'.

The imprint of Volumes III and IV is modified to, 'Librairie De Firmin Didot Frères'.

The content of the volumes is indicated briefly by the subtitles of the added engraved title-plates of Volumes I-III: 1. Voie Tombeaux Murailles Et Portes De La Ville; 2. Habitations; 3. Portiques. Volume IV (it does not have an added title-plate) contains an account of theatres - including the Pompeian amphitheatre and the theatre at Herculaneum.

The plates show plans, elevations and sections of buildings, views, reconstructions, architectural details and some wall-paintings.

In Volumes III and IV some plates have been coloured by hand (Vol. III. pl. 21, 26, 27, 36, 37, 45, 46, 50; Vol. IV. pl. 1, 21 -23, 26, 39, 42, 48 bis).

An Italian translation of Parts I and II was published in 1825. The text of T.L. Donaldson's Pompeii, Illustrated With Picturesque Views (1827) draws heavily on Mazois's work.
