Each plate carries the publisher's imprint, 'Io. Iacob. de Rubeis Romæ ad Temp. Pacis cu' Priv. S. Pont' - in plate [21] the date 'L'Anno 1686' is added; and in plate [22] the publisher's name, Io.Iacobus de Rubeis, appears as signatory to the dedication.

Plate 21 is unsigned, but all others are signed as painted by Petrus Berettinus Corton. (or similar), and (except pl. 22) as engraved by Cornel. Bloemart (6 pl.), Iac. Blondeau (6 pl.); L. Visscher, F. Spierre, Car. de la Haye (2 pl. each); Alb. Clouuet, Lauuers Coenradt, Gerardin, P. Simon or Bernardus Balliu (1 each).

The publication is dedicated by De' Rossi to Francesco Maria de' Medici, son of Cortona's patron, Grand-Duke Ferdinand II of Tuscany.

Summary Note

The plates show a suite of ceiling decorations made in 1641-1647 by Pietro da Cortona in the Pitti Palace, Florence, for Grand-Duke Ferdinand II of Tuscany. The scheme, devised by Francesco Rondinelli, shows the ideal ruler at various stages of his life (each stage governed by a presiding planet).
