The Arts Club

RA Collection: People and Organisations

Founded in 1863, as a meeting place for London's artistic community. First established in 17 Hanover Square to Club moved in 1894 to 40 Dover Street, its current address.

The Club was and remains a dining club on the typical Victorian model. It was a venue for social exchange and what is now commonly termed "networking". The Club was incredibly influential in the latter part of the 19th century. It was said that to become an Academician membership was compulsory. Between 1890 and 1920 70% of elected Academicians were also members of the Arts Club.

The Arts Club continues to operate largely on the lines as laid out by 1900, although women are now permitted as members. It no longer carries anything like the influence over the artistic community that it once boasted. Links with the Academy are proudly maintained, although the relationship is nowhere near as close as forermly.
