Royal Scottish Academy

RA Collection: People and Organisations

The Scottish Academy was formed in 1826 by eleven Scottish artists. The Academy was based to a large extent on the model provided by the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The main aims were to hold an annual exhibition, to improve facilities for the instruction of students, to open a library for the fine arts and to assist artists in distress.

In 1838 it was awarded a Royal charter and from that time was known as the Royal Scottish Academy.
