William Luson Thomas (1830 - 1900)

Trained as a wood engraver, notably for the Illustrated London News. Established illustrated papers with his brother George H. Thomas in Paris and New York, before launching The Graphic in December 1869. His ‘brilliant staff’ included the finest illustrators of the day including Pinwell, Herkomer and Arthur Boyd Houghton. He commissioned Filde’s famous socially realistic work ‘Houseless and Hungry’.
