William Bewick (1795 - 1866)

Portrait and history painter. At the age of 20 Bewick joined Benjamin Robert Haydon’s workshop in London. In 1826 Sir Thomas Lawrence asked him to go to Italy to make copies of the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. After working for Sir Thomas in Rome for two years, Bewick returned to England where he painted historical subjects and portraits. He exhibited at the British Institution from 1822 to 1840 and at the Royal Academy from 1839 to 1840.
