Thomas Evans (1742 - 1784)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

London bookseller. He served an apprenticeship with Charles Marsh of Round Court and Charing Cross, and opened a bookshop at 50 Strand, near the York Buildings, in 1774. He published works on English literature and antiquities, many edited by himself.

Not to be confused with Thomas Evans (1739–1803), the Welsh-born, London-based bookseller and publisher of the Morning Chronicle and the London Packet, who had an altercation in his Paternoster Row shop with Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774) in 1773 due to an article published in the London Packet.
