Sarah van Niekerk (1934 - 2018)

Wood-engraver, born in London. Studied under Gertrude Hermes at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where she was also taught by Mervyn Peake. Later studied at the Slade under William Coldstream, Anthony Gross and Lynton Lamb. She taught wood-engraving at the Royal Academy Schools in the 1970’s. She also taught at the City & Guilds Art School and West Dean College.

She was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, a Royal West of England Academician and an Honorary Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. She was a member of the Society of Wood Engravers, of which she was the Chair between 1995 – 1998.
