Macbeth King of Scotland (c.1005 - 1057)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

King of Scots from 1040 until his death. Macbeth’s life, like that of his predecessor King Duncan I, had progressed far towards legend by the end of the 14th century, when John of Fordun and Andrew of Wyntoun wrote their histories. Hector Boece, Walter Bower, and George Buchanan all contributed to the legend. Shakespeare’s play, is based mainly upon Raphael Holinshed’s account in his The Chronicles of England, Scotlande, and Irelande (1577).
