Joseph Parkin Mayall (1839 - 1906)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

The photographer Joseph Parkin Mayall was the son of the pioneering photographer and politician John Jabez Edwin Mayall. He was born in 1839, shortly before his father began experimenting with the new daguerreotype process.

Joseph Parkin Mayall, along with his siblings John and Edwin, all followed their father in becoming photographers. His most notable body of work was his series Artists at Home, comprising 25 photographic portraits of leading Victorian artists in their homes. This publication provided a valuable insight into the living and working environments of artists such as Watts, Millais and Leighton.

Mayall died in 1906.
